My top tip for today – if you ever want to get great service and great food – make sure you go with a friend who is also a great food critic and journalist.
I had a fabulous lunch with Neil Davey at Goodman’s Steak Restaurant in Mayfair – a regular haunt for Neil it turns out. He is always “just popping in for a small burger and truffle chips” and ends up spending the afternoon tasting the latest addition to their wine cellar.
Within 5 mins of arriving the maitre d’ made sure that the head chef introduced himself and personally took us through the menu. We went with his recommendation – 50 day aged earthy British beef and just for comparison, the sweeter USDA beef they regularly import. Either we had the best steak knives in the world or these were the most tender and tastiest steaks we had ever had.
The portions got the better of us however and a doggie bag was called for. George will never be satisfied with Pedigree Chum again…..
Neil and I met to plan a bit of a challenge for 2012 – but more on this later…..
- Doggie bag
- 50 day aged steak and truffle chips…..yummy
- “You can forget that tinned stuff”
